What's the connection between midsummer and mystery?

Today is the summer solstice, sometimes known as midsummer. In many cultures, this time of year was thought to be the time when magic was strongest. (Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, which is filled with fairies and otherworldly creatures, was set on this day for a reason!) What is the most magical or mysterious thing about summer for you? What do you remember about summer as a child?

Midsummer is only the beginning of a better weather pattern. The mystery is in all aspects which follow after the solstice; moon, sun, stars, weather patterns, the behavior of animals and the events of man.

I don't associate summer with mystery so much as I do freedom.  The long days make me feel like I actually have more time.  In the summer, seven hours of sleep is enough, and I... More »
