What is your most vivid memory of nature?

Posted on Apr 23rd, 2007 by Gaia Team : Gaia Team Gaia Team
Sunday was Earth Day, but we'd like to continue this theme for a bit. Yesterday you looked at our planet from a distance--you took the time to 'zoom out' and to imagine the Earth across vast expanses of time and space. Today, let's 'zoom in.' Think back to your most vivid, and personal, recollection of the natural world. Was it the first time you laid eyes on the Pacific? A flaming sunset on some mountain lake? An overnight trip up the highest peak in the Rockies? Or a childhood memory of being captivated by a caterpillar? Think for a minute, and let us know.

After a good deal of time thinking about this, I was able to narrow down to one memory. There were a lot competing, though; The Rockies, California redwoods, Niagra Falls, a beautiful, gnarled tree in... More »

Watching the fresh lava ooze on the Big Island. Feeling the heat start to make the bottoms of my shoes melt. Touching the lava with a stick. Being there as new land is born.
